Whether it is environmental, cost, aesthetic, operational, program or whole-of-life performance, DEM is committed to embracing your brief and goals. We take an approach of first-rate client service and engineering rigour, applying our experience, ingenuity and imagination to achieve your objectives.
Our goals are twofold:
Goal 1: To facilitate the achievement of your goal. Your goal is our goal. We want to help our clients achieve their objectives by developing a deep understanding of their business and aims, and by deploying second-to-none engineering expertise, advice, consultation and support.
Goal 2: To drive projects to their highest performance potential. Our focus is performance. We imagine, transform and design to enable your project to achieve its highest potential economic, social and environmental performance throughout its entire lifecycle.
Working with you – we aim to add significant value to your business and your project. We will only work with you if we believe we can assist you in a meaningful and significant way.
Performance – all our services are designed to engineer performance for you. We understand that a design, building or process is a means to an end. We first ask what performance means for your business – and then we wrap our engineering around your needs. We work to your requirements and objectives; not ours.
Experience – we have extensive experience in contracting and consulting across numerous sectors in the UK, NSW and WA. We bring the benefits of this experience directly to your project to create value for you.
A unique skillset – we don’t just carry engineering degrees; we are also qualified in other key fields. Director and senior engineer Nick Devlin has qualifications in Environmental Science, which adds a unique perspective and approach to his engineering. DEM sees the bigger picture and looks to bring new ideas and solutions into consideration for the benefit of your project.
Continuity – our Director will be active in your project; we understand the importance of continuity of personnel to projects. When we nominate a particular team member to work on your project, that’s who you will get.
Rigour – we research solutions. We critically review and apply science to what we do. We are thorough; and we use the latest software, analysis and engineering techniques. In these ways, we bring you real, demonstrable value.
We make it easy for you – we use jargon-free reporting and clear communication with properly supported recommendations. We lay out the options clearly and convey the benefits and drawbacks of each to make decision-making easy for you.
We manage your risk – our own behind-the-scenes critical review and risk mitigation strategies protect our clients and their interests.
Practical – we understand the local market, constructability, and what can and can’t be achieved in a real-world environment. We aim to provide simple and elegant solutions to complex problems.
We believe in Australia – we use local people and local products wherever possible. 10% of company profits are donated to Australian charities.
We understand our place in the project – we are just one part of a wider team so we work to balance all factors to achieve a ‘best for client’ outcome. We believe high performing buildings should look good, feel good and lift the spirit. This can only be achieved with an integrated team approach.
We take the journey with you – when you engage us on your project, we will walk with you until it is finished. We want to see your project completed and working to your satisfaction long into the future.
Sustainable – we embed sustainable thinking into our engineering, balancing economic, social and environmental factors throughout the lifecycle of the project. We believe that truly sustainable decisions should demonstrate an ongoing tangible benefit to our clients and the wider community.

BEng (Hons) Building Services Engineering, MSc (with merit) Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy, MIEAust NER, MAIRAH, CEng MCIBSE
Steven has almost 20 years’ experience as a mechanical building services consulting engineer, both in the UK and Australia. Steven relocated to Australia in 2011, and has since worked with some of Australia’s largest multi-disciplinary consultancies including NDY, WSP and Cundall. Steven was mechanical team leader at WSP and Cundall in Perth before joining the Property Due Diligence team at KPMG. Steven joined Devlin Engineering & Management (DEM) in 2019.
Steven not only has expertise in mechanical services, but also electrical, hydraulic, fire and vertical transportation services. This experience has come in many forms including hydraulic and wet fire design, project managing lift replacement projects and undertaking technical due diligence (all building services) on large property portfolios across Australia. This wide-ranging experience means that Steven has an acute understanding and robust technical knowledge of all services elements.
Steven loves to pass his knowledge on to junior team members and has mentored engineers in the UK and Australia. Steven is proud to be in regular contact with engineers he has previously mentored who continue to seek advice and guidance.
Steven has a passion for energy efficient and sustainable design. He believes that in order to achieve optimum outcomes engineers must be willing to develop their knowledge and understanding of other disciplines outside of their chosen field of expertise. With technology enhancements continuously pushing the boundaries of what is possible in building design, it is important to stay current with the latest technologies and practices. Steven seeks to achieve this through regular attendance of seminars and undertaking CPD activities.
Steven loves engineering, problem solving and delivering projects that are both on time and that exceed client expectations. He enjoys working on a diverse range of projects, and being actively involved in the collaborative nature of team work, as the best project outcomes are delivered in an environment which actively encourages the input of all team members.
